FAHARI in Kiswahili means ‘pride‿which ultimately encapsulates the theme of the organisation. Fahari is a Social Enterprise, registered as an NGO, making high quality bags, jewellery and accessories on the island of Zanzibar. All of Fahari’s products are handmade using local materials with expert workmanship - taking inspiration from the cultural melting-pot of African, Arabian & Indian influences borne out of years of trading across the Indian Ocean.
All products are made to international standards of both design and manufacture but produced entirely from Tanzanian materials to benefit the local economy. Fahari was started by Julie Lawrence, internationally renowned designer; and offers free training and employment opportunities to Zanzibaris, especially women.
The organisation’s purpose is to provide a sustainable livelihood through training in the design and production of quality craft products leading to sales and income. Fahari will soon start a training programme aimed at people with disabilities and youth from the SOS Children Village orphanage."
